# Does colostrum survive hot liquids? The honest answer is no

## The short version

No. The parts of colostrum worth paying for are proteins, and heat takes proteins apart. Stir a colostrum powder into hot coffee, hot tea, hot water or warm milk and you will still end up with a drink. It just will not be the drink you thought you were making. Cold or room temperature only. This is the one preparation rule we are completely inflexible about, and we would rather say it plainly here than have you find out after a month of lattes.

## What heat actually does to colostrum

Colostrum is interesting because of what is packed into it: immunoglobulins (IgG is the one you see printed on labels), lactoferrin, growth factors and a long list of other bioactive compounds. Those are not minerals sitting there waiting to be counted. They are proteins, and a protein is folded into a specific shape. The shape is the function.

Heat unfolds them. That is what denaturing means, and you have watched it happen a hundred times without calling it that: an egg white goes from clear and runny to opaque and firm in a pan, and it never goes back. Nothing was added. Nothing burned. The proteins just lost their shape permanently. Something similar happens to the bioactives in colostrum in a hot mug, minus the part where you can see it. The powder dissolves, the drink looks exactly right, and the reason you bought the powder is already behind you.

This is also why processing temperature matters long before the jar reaches your kitchen. Careful manufacturers spend real money keeping colostrum cool from the farm through drying and packing, because the same sensitivity applies at every step. Undoing all of that at the last stage with a kettle is a sad way to finish the story.

## How hot is too hot

Here is the point where a lot of brands would hand you a confident number. We are not going to, because the honest position is that different compounds give way at different points, and no single temperature line covers all of them.

The practical rule is easier than a number anyway. If you would describe the liquid as hot, it is too hot. Brewed coffee comes off the machine close to boiling. Tea is usually steeped hotter. Milk warmed in a saucepan is plenty hot enough to matter. Cold dairy milk, cold water, cold oat or almond milk, and anything sitting at room temperature are all fine.

Room temperature really is fine, which surprises people who assume the rule is about refrigeration. It is not. Cold is pleasant. Cold is how this is supposed to taste. But the actual constraint is heat, so a glass of water that has been on the counter all afternoon is not a problem.

## What you lose, and what you still have

Nobody needs to be dramatic about this. Heat does not turn colostrum into something harmful. It turns it into something ordinary.

## The coffee question, which is always the coffee question

Iced coffee: yes, and it is one of the better things you can do with this powder. Cold brew: yes. Hot latte, hot americano, a fresh cup of drip: no. "I will let it cool for a minute first" sounds reasonable and almost never survives contact with an actual morning, and coffee that has cooled to comfortably drinkable is still warm enough to be doing damage on the way down.

## Hot liquids wearing a disguise

A few of these come up often enough to name:

**Oatmeal straight off the stove.** Same rule. Let the bowl cool to warm-at-most, or stir it in once it has settled, or skip it and drink it alongside.

**Warm milk at night.** A glass of warm milk before bed is a lovely old habit and a bad delivery vehicle. Cold works just as well for the ritual, and it is the version that keeps the colostrum intact.

**Hot chocolate.** We understand the logic completely. It is chocolate powder. It looks like it belongs in a hot mug. It does not.

**The microwave shortcut.** Warming the liquid so the powder dissolves faster is the single most common reason people break this rule, and it is the easiest one to fix, which brings us to the next part.

## If the only reason you want heat is the clumping

Then the fix is a tool, not a temperature.

It does clump in cold milk. A frother sorts it out in about five seconds. A shaker bottle works, a blender works, and even a spoon works if you add the powder to a small amount of liquid first, stir that into a paste, then top it up. What does not work is pretending this is not a real tradeoff. Cold liquid asks slightly more of you at mixing time. That is the price of the thing staying what it is.

## Storing the jar

Worth separating, because people conflate the two. A sealed jar of dry powder is a far more stable object than a protein floating in a hot drink, so a warm mail truck in July is not the same problem as a warm mug. Keep the jar in a cupboard rather than on a sunny windowsill, keep it dry, close the lid properly. That is the whole of it.

## FAQ

**Does heating colostrum make it unsafe?**
No. The concern is not safety, it is that you spent money on compounds that are no longer in the state that made them interesting. It becomes a normal chocolate drink, not a hazard.

**What if the liquid is warm rather than hot?**
Warm is a gamble and hot is a certainty, so we would rather you stayed at cold or room temperature where there is nothing to weigh up.

**Does colostrum work better cold, or only survive better cold?**
